G77: Hating on the People

Cécile S | June 18, 2012.

A tradition at the UNFCCC climate talks, the Fossil of the Day is awarded daily to the countries doing their utmost to hinder climate action. Last night, the Group of Developing Countries (G77) took home first prize at Rio+20.

The G77 have blocked negotiations on the nine Major Groups which limits the roles of civil society participants. Without the inclusion of those who represent the general public as a whole, it is impossible to create an inclusive and participatory decision making process. Despite the support that the G77 generally receives from these groups, countries such are Algeria are in disagreement with their role within the official process.

The lack of progress on Major Groups is one of many subject areas that have hindered the progress of the negotiations. The result is neither constructive for governments or civil society with the release of a compromised declaration text.

As negotiations continue to occur behind closed doors, it is clear that without the inclusion of Major Groups – the voices of the people will remain unheard.
